What is Ayurveda?
Ayurveda is formed of two words (Ayu + Veda) which means the "Science of Age". It aims at protecting the health of an individual and curing the patient of his disease, so that he may prolong his age limit to the desired end.
The science of Ayurveda is the complete science of medicine where we find full discussion about the origin of diseases and their possible cure. This system of medicine was developed first ever the origin of humanity on this globe by the great seers and visionaries of Bharat to cure the human beings, animals and even trees of their diseases. Ayurveda is the branch (or Upaveda) of Atharvaveda.
Types of Ayurvedic Treatment
Ayurveda prescribes two types of treatment :
1. Deva-vyapasraya (Astronomical) treatment : Deva-vyapasraya (Astronomical) treatment is prescribed for Karmaja diseases or diseases born as a result of actions done in the past life.
2. Yukti-vyapasraya (Medicational) treatment : Yukti-vyapasraya (Medicational) treatment is prescribed for the treatment of Dosaja or diseases born as result of imbalance of three Dosas.
How does Ayurveda Work ?
Ayurveda provides the natural treatment to all the diseases that are caused due to inconsistency in the natural process of our bodies. This system, in other words, follows the natural course while proceeding with the treatment of diseases. As per Ayurveda, treatment of all the diseases lies with the nature itself. The nature is composed of five elements : Akasha, Vayu (air), Agni (light and heat), Jala (water) and Prthivi (earth). Of these five, only three - Vayu (air), Agni (light and heat), Jala (water) - play an important role in the formation or deformation of nature. Following the same principle, Ayurvedic system finds the origin of all the disease based upon three Doshas : vata (representative of air in our body), pita (representative of fire in our body ) and kafa (representative of water in our body). The verse goes like this :
" Without vitiation of Doshas, no diseases process is possible. Still where the Dosha is not detected, the Doctor should proceed to treat the patient on the basis of the symptoms."
Thus the principal of Ayurvedic treatment, as indicated in the verse above, lies in the treatment of Doshas, and if it is not possible it asks to treat the patient on the basis of the visible symptoms. Here it may be indicated that method of symptom treatment is followed by Homeopathy as the main principle. Homeopathy treats the exiting symptoms with the help of extracts of herbs, etc. As such, it can unhesitatingly be maintained that Homeopathy is also consisted in Ayurveda.
There is another verse reflecting on the natural course of Ayurvedic treatment, which goes like this
" If one has followed the regimen (set rules for diet/ or dietary discipline), he need not administer the medicines."
Thus Ayurveda suggests the natural way of living and naturopathic treatment to promote health and well-being of human-beings. So, it is crystal clear that Naturopathy is not separate from Ayurveda, rather it is also included in it.
Apart from the above two, methods of Accupresser and Accupuncture are followed in Panchakarma application. It may be said, they are the part of Ayurvedic treatment.
Yoga has been promoted in Ayurveda as a package of exercises promoting mental as well as physical health of individuals.
Ayurveda has also taken into consideration the astronomical origin of various diseases of human-beings. As per Ayurveda, diseases are also caused by papa-karmas or sins committed in past life. Accordingly:
" A sin committed in the past life gives trouble in the form of diseases in the present life. The cure of such diseases is possible through medication, charitable actions, Japa, Homa and worship of deities. The diseases which can be cured by proper medication are known as born due to one's actions / karmas. And the rest of the diseases are called as born due to the imbalance of three Doshas."
Allopathy is also included in the the yukti-vyapasraya (medicational) treatment of Ayurveda. Allopathy prescribes the chemical treatment of the sick body which is composed of various chemicals. Drugs made out of herbal and other substances attack viruses. The power of the drug is ascertained according to the power of the virus infecting our body. If the virus is powerful, the drug should also be powerful regardless to time, space and the enduring power of patient. This treatment generally suppress the symptoms without treating them, thus leading to various side effects. There is no treatment of headache (migraine), acidity, hypertension, diabetes, and asthma.
Now-a-days we have household diseases like AIDS and cancer which find no cure in Allopathy. On the contrary, Ayurveda has told us so many years ago what is good and what is bad; what is beneficial and what is harmful; what is health promoting and what is not; how to save health from being deteriorate and how to remove ailments of the sufferer. In fact, Ayurveda was defined with these objectives in mind. For example : Ayurveda cautioned the people in the very beginning of human-life that Agni is basis of immunity power and seamen is the basis of life in men. So, both Agni and Virya (seamen) should be protected by all means.
Now a days the AIDS is the result of loss of immunization power in men. The loss of this power took place for want of protection of Agni in the body. Allopathy has no such concept, as such it has no cure for regaining the deficient immunity power and hence AIDS is incurable. On the other hand, Ayurveda has the technique to regain the lost Agni of body. With the regain of Agni in body, one is able to regain the deficient immunity power. The techniques suggested in Ayurveda to regain the lost power are : Yoga, Naturopathy and Panchakarma, with the help of application of which, one is able to regain the power to fight with diseases . Only drugs cannot revive the power, it is the system of body that has to be revived. In fact, the defect always lies in the system and not in person / organ / part. We cannot treat one part or organ until and unless whole system is treated. Thus Ayurveda is the complete science which is able to revive the complete system completely.
Ayurveda also prescribes the treatment of a patient in view of his immunity power in the context of place and time. According to the Ayurveda, treatment done in view of immunity power with regard to place and time gives good results and leads to the name and fame of the Physician.
Side-effect Free Treatment
Ayurvedic treatment is a complete treatment which is free from side-effects and after-effects.
Role of vata, pitta and kapha
According to Ayurveda, the entire biological life (humans, animals or plants) evolved in this universe is endowed with vata, pitta and kapha constitution. As such, vata, pitta and kapha play a vital role in keeping the body healthy and diseases free. The vitiation of vata, pitta and kapha causes various ailments in the body and their pacification/balancing is helpful in the cure of resultant diseases. If a healthy person or a patient is able to know his vata, pitta and kapha constitution type, he can keep himself healthy throughout his life by following a particular dietary regimen and herbal prescription designed (in Ayurveda) for various diseases resulting from the vitiation of vata, pitta and kapha. He can also prolong his life span and live a long life free from diseases. Nadi vaidya is able to examine the patient on the basis of the vata, pitta and kapha domination and constitution type through pulse diagnose. But for want of a dextrous Nadi vaidya, it is not easy to get properly medically examined for the treatment of prevailing diseases. We have designed here a Medical test which will help you examine properly for your diseases and for Ayurvedic treatment based upon your vata, pitta and kapha constitution and dominance type.
