gvedic Knowledge of the Saros Eclipse Cycle: Evidence for Advanced Vedic Astronomy

Prof. Ravi Prakash Arya, Former UGC Chair Professor, M.D.University, Rohtak, Haryana

Abstract

This paper examines evidence from the Ṛgveda demonstrating a sophisticated understanding of the Saros eclipse cycle, long predating the often-cited discoveries by the Chaldeans and Egyptians. Rigvedic hymns, particularly RV 3.9.9, encode precise astronomical computations, including half-tithi counts, nodal corrections, and recurrence patterns for both solar and lunar eclipses. Our analysis highlights that Vedic Ṛṣis possessed predictive knowledge of eclipses, integrating mathematical accuracy, observational rigor, and calendrical frameworks. These findings challenge prevailing historical narratives that credit ancient Mesopotamia and Egypt with early eclipse prediction and reveal that Vedic literature represents a scientifically grounded tradition rather than solely mythological texts.
