भारतीय ज्ञानपरम्परायां पुरुषार्थः (Purushartha in the Indian Knowledge System)

Dr. Rakesh Kumar Mishra, Asstt. prof. Govt. Women's College Puri, Odisha-752002

Abstract

On this earth, people who do not understand the true objective of human life wander aimlessly, driven only by impulses, much like animals. In Bharatvarsha, our ancestors discovered and articulated the deeper purpose of human existence. They taught that human life is guided by four fundamental objectives: Dharma, Artha, Kāma, and Moksha.

Together, these four aims are known by a single profound term: Purushartha.

Within the Indian knowledge system, the concept of Purushartha is explained with great depth and clarity. It represents the complete framework of human purpose — ethical living, rightful prosperity, harmonious desires, and ultimately liberation. It is through understanding and practicing Purushartha that human life attains meaning, direction, and fulfillment.
