Timeless Wisdom, Timeless Education: The Vedic Holistic System for the Upliftment of Humanity

Balbir Singh Sihag, Professor Emeritus of Economics, University of Massachusetts, Lowell

Abstract

Vedic seers were creative, curious, virtuous, and wise. They gave us Vedas, the books of ethics, knowledge and wisdom. They innovated and implemented the Gurukul system of genuine holistic education for raising a child to be a good human being: possessing high quality of intellect, ethically grounded, physically strong, skilled to be productive and spiritually sound. An attempt is made to explore:

(i) the most fundamental question: why did the Vedic Seers practice such hard tapas?

(ii) Why has the Vedic education system been the most fruitful innovation in human history for producing outstanding scholars who made common good enhancing and world-shaping contributions to medicine, philosophy, mathematics, logic, yoga, science, language, and economics?

(iii) Clarifications and expansion of Vedic seers’ contributions by Maharishi Valmiki, Maharishi Ved Vyas and Acharya Chanakya are provided. (iv) It is indicated that our own sources of knowledge are more relevant to cultivation of intellect (which includes reflection and critical thinking) than the foreign sources. Any individual who wants to be an ideal teacher should look no further than our own outstanding ancient Gurus and acharyas..
