The Ordered Universe: Vedic Metaphysics in Dialogue with Modern Science

Abstract

ऋ॒तं च॑ स॒त्यं चा॒भी॑द्धा॒त्तप॒सोऽध्य॑जायत । ततो॒ रात्र्य॑जायत॒ ततः॑ समु॒द्रो अ॑र्ण॒वः ॥

ṛtam ca satyam cābhīddhāttapaso’dhyajāyata ǀ tato rātryajāyata tataḥ samudro arṇavaḥ ǁ Ṛgveda 10.190.01

The Vedic worldview presents a comprehensive framework integrating metaphysics, natural philosophy, and epistemology. Radhakrishnan (1923:80) observes, "The world is no more a chaos representing the blind fury of chance elements, but is the working of a harmonious purpose". At its core are the fundamental principles of Ṛta and Satya that define the structure and functioning of the cosmos.

Modern science has developed through rigorous empirical methodologies, evolving from classical physics to quantum mechanics and relativity. Newton established deterministic laws governing motion and gravity, while Einstein (1921:112) 'redefined space and time as a unified continuum'.

Quantum mechanics introduced a fundamental break from classical causality: Neils Bohr asserted that "the dynamical equilibrium of the systems in the stationary states can be discussed by help of the ordinary mechanics, while the passing of the systems between different stationary states cannot be treated on that basis" (Bohr, 1913, p. 7). This paper argues that a dialogue between Vedic cosmology and modern physics reveals deep structural parallels that can enrich both traditions.
